Curatorial Text

I'm writing the exhibition statement, and I need some help. The title of this exhibition is Trans-비전 ヴィジョン. It is curated by orm, which consists of Chikaya, Tomoya, and me. We planned this exhibition by reaching out to Japanese friends who run galleries and create works in Takamatsu via Instagram, meeting them in person, and building connections.

The reason I wanted to connect with them was that, after staying in Korea for an extended period due to the pandemic, I felt isolated. Realistically, moving abroad wasn’t an option, so I looked for ways to embrace different changes within my environment. My interest in Japan comes from the fact that it is not vastly different from Korea but rather slightly different. That slight difference makes it perceptible in a subtle way.

The exhibition title reflects this context. You know what "Trans" (transformation) means, right? "비전" is written in Korean, but it means "Vision." The same goes for ヴィジョン. Chikaya, Tomoya, and I communicate in English, so naming the exhibition and conveying its nuance wasn’t easy. Even though we speak in English, each of us understands words through the nuances of Korean, Japanese, and our own experiences.

A massive utility pole created by orm is featured in the exhibition. orm and I share the experience of studying in Europe, and after returning to Korea or Japan, we found the tangled complexity of utility poles strikingly vivid. The idea of being near high-voltage currents felt somewhat unsettling. orm must have wanted to bring the utility pole indoors. The piece even distributes power within the exhibition, making it functional.

Yoonjae Lee will present a work that measures various retinas, transforms them into actual filters, and attaches them to multiple cameras to livestream a single light. Although it is one light source, it will appear in different ways, reflecting the atmosphere of the space.

Seungbin Yang has created a digital replica that merges the Louis Ghost Chair with a Baroque armchair, existing between the original and the reproduction. Referencing Philippe Starck’s reinterpretation of the Baroque armchair with contemporary materials, Yang attempts a modern reinterpretation that exposes the distortions inherent in technology. It is also a fusion of past and present.

I have expanded landscape recognition technology to generate images. While this is an old technique, I find that it reveals the fundamental principles of image generation. Through this process, I visualize how the gap between the real and the virtual is filled, making the way the work is structured transparently visible as well.

Wunggyu Park was repulsed by the idea of consuming food made from intestines, which then returns to the intestines. When he told me about it, I didn’t feel particularly good about it either. It was unsettling, but at the same time, it made me think about the texture and sensation of intestines.

These are the reasons behind the selection of participating artists. I’d like you to refine this into a structured exhibition statement. It would be great if the curatorial process—from the initial planning to the selection of works that intersect language, image, object, and the body—could be conveyed through the statement. (Chat GPT Translation)
