Artist’s Note

Dice thrown towards Dice is a publication bringing together the reflections of six visitors who experienced Yoonjae Lee's solo exhibition ≪Hovering Duration≫, presented at Caption Seoul in July 2024. Rather than functioning as documentation or interpretation, the book was conceived as an extension of the exhibition itself—an experiment in translating the exhibition into the medium of the book.


1. Hovering Duration

≪Hovering Duration≫ invited viewers into a space that, at first glance, appeared almost entirely empty. Expecting an object of contemplation, visitors instead encountered white walls and an apparently vacant space, a situation that momentarily suspended the act of viewing and redirected attention toward their own position as spectators.

Throughout the exhibition space, Lee concealed texts using UV-reactive photochromic pigment. These writings consisted of responses left by previous visitors to the exhibition, alongside quotations from and adaptations of literary works. While some visitors, confronted only with blank walls, wandered briefly before leaving, most picked up the UV flashlights provided in the gallery and began searching for the hidden inscriptions. Illuminated by ultraviolet light, the texts momentarily surfaced as dark lettering before gradually disappearing once again.

Like the experience of viewing itself, these traces of others' encounters with the exhibition resist permanence. As visitors moved through the space at their own pace, choosing their own sequence of discovery, each assembled a different exhibition in memory. In this process, the viewer no longer occupied the position of a detached observer but became implicated in the work itself. The exhibition thus posed a quiet question: at what moment does the act of viewing become part of the artwork?

2. Concept and Production

Dice thrown towards Dice was conceived alongside ≪Hovering Duration≫ from the earliest stages of the exhibition's development. Because the exhibition centered on the act of viewing, the artist regarded the responses of its visitors not as supplementary documentation but as an essential component of the work's continuing form. Accordingly, the six contributors were selected not for their standing within the art world, but for the singularity of their perspectives and the distinctive qualities of their writing.

The publication is therefore not conceived as an exhibition catalogue or archival record. Rather, it extends the exhibition by translating it into another medium while simultaneously anticipating its afterlife. In keeping with the exhibition's own logic of appearance and disappearance, the book was printed on thermal paper, allowing its contents to gradually fade over time.

The design of the publication likewise echoes the spatial experience of the exhibition. Just as visitors uncovered hidden texts by scanning the gallery walls with UV light, readers are invited to discover the text within the book itself. Page numbers have been deliberately omitted, and blank pages have been inserted at irregular intervals between the essays, disrupting linear progression and encouraging a more exploratory mode of reading. Consequently, every copy of the publication differs slightly in thickness, rendering each edition a singular object rather than a standardized reproduction.

〈주사위를 향해 던져진 주사위〉는 2024년 7월 캡션 서울에서 열린 이윤재의 개인전 ≪Hovering Duration≫을 다녀간 여섯 관람객의 전시 감상 이후 자유로운 생각을 모아 엮은 책으로서, 전시를 기록하거나 해설하는 용도가 아니라, 전시 자체를 책의 형식으로 옮겨보는 하나의 실험으로서 기획되었다.



1. Hovering Duration

≪Hovering Duration≫은 관객이 ‘무언가를 보러’ 들어온 전시장 안에서 정작 아무것도 보이지 않는 상황과 마주하도록 만든 전시였다. 텅 빈 듯 보이는 흰 벽과 공간은 관객을 잠시 당황하게 하고, 곧 감상자로서의 자기 자신을 의식하게 만들었다. 작가는 UV에 반응하는 광변색 안료를 사용해 전시장 벽 곳곳에 글을 숨겨두었는데, 문장들은 이미 이 전시를 보고 간 이들의 후기이거나, 문학 작품에서 인용되거나 변형된 것들이었다. 실제로, 아무것도 없는, 사방이 하얀 벽을 마주한 일부 관객은 어리둥절한 채 공간을 둘러보다 전시장을 떠나기도 했다. 그럼에도 대부분의 관객은 비치된 UV 랜턴을 손에 들고 벽을 비추며 숨겨진 글귀를 찾아 나섰다. 랜턴을 비추면 흰 벽에 숨어 있던 글자가 잠시 검게 드러났다가 곧 사라졌다. 감상이라는 것이 그러하듯, 누군가의 감상의 기록인 것 같은 벽면의 글자들 역시 붙잡아 둘 수 없다. 관객은 자신만의 속도와 순서로 공간을 탐색하며 전시를 구성하고, 각자가 기억하는 전시는 모두 다르게 남는다. 이때 관객은 자신이 이 작품을 이루는 일부라는 사실을 인식하고 있을까.

2. 기획과 제작 의도

〈주사위를 향해 던져진 주사위〉는 이미 전시 준비 단계에서 기획되었다. ≪Hovering Duration≫이 ‘감상’이 핵심이 되는 전시인 만큼, 실제 관객의 목소리가 더해져야 이 전시가 비로소 의미있는 형식으로 완성될 수 있다고 보았다. 그렇기에 미술계에서의 위치나 명성과 의도적으로 거리를 두고서, 자신만의 고유한 글쓰기의 리듬과 시선을 가졌는지를 가장 중요하게 고려하여 여섯명의 인물을 골라 글을 의뢰하였다.

한편, 이 책은 전시의 부산물이 아니라, 전시를 책이라는 매체로 변형하면서 동시에 그 이후를 예고하는 오브제이기도 하다. 그리하여 (전시처럼) 궁극적으로 책의 내용 역시 사라져야 한다고 판단해 감열지를 사용하여 제작되었다. 전시장 안에서 UV 랜턴으로 벽에 숨겨진 글귀를 발견하듯, 독자가 책에서도 텍스트를 ‘발견’하게 하기위하여 페이지 번호는 의도적으로 제거하였고, 각 글 사이사이에 무작위로 빈 페이지들를 삽입했다. 이에 따라 책마다 두께가 제각각으로 완성되었다.
